Diabetes

Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition that affects how your body converts food into energy. With it, your body doesn’t make enough insulin or it can’t use insulin as well as it should. When this happens, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream and over time this can cause serious health problems. Current treatment options are limited and often only reactionary rather than reversing the disease itself. However, at Re-Gen Fitness and Recovery, we have several therapies that can help reduce or reverse the effects of diabetes and improve the quality, if not also length, of your life.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has shown the ability to improve beta cell function of the pancreas, which is the part that regulates insulin and is often dysfunctional in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Research has found it can also improve insulin and glucose sensitivity and reduce resting levels of blood sugar and cholesterol. In fact, in one study examining 20 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen over the course of 4 weeks, researchers found that HBOT was able to increase these factors by 13-16%, which would result in significant improvements to health. HBOT has been shown to improve ulcer wound healing 2.5 times more than when regular treatment did not include HBOT. Additionally, its regular use has been shown to lead to significantly fewer diabetic amputations. Another study of 20 sessions revealed that HBOT led to a 8 times lower fasting blood sugar, a 17 times lower insulin resistance, a 3.5 times lower Hba1C and a 5 times reduction in cholesterol compared to a control group. Other research has shown improvements in pain, numbness, tingling, vision, and burning sensations associated with diabetic neuropathies.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF)

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy has been shown as a promising treatment to improve blood sugar, insulin function, inflammation, and circulation in diabetes. In a study of 18 sessions, researchers found that PEMF was able to significantly reduce blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while increasing circulation and wound healing. In another study of 28 sessions, PEMF lowered HbA1c, decreased insulin resistance, and improved cholesterol and inflammation levels. Finally, in a study of 10 sessions over 4 weeks, PEMF was shown to improve peripheral blood flow by 44.6%. This is important, as impaired circulation is a common complication of diabetes, which can lead to further health issues such as slow wound healing, diabetic foot ulcers, vision loss, amputations, and organ failure.

Cryotherapy and Infrared Heat Therapy

The combination of cryotherapy and infrared heat therapy are less researched in diabetes, but have shown promising effects on improving circulation and inflammation. In fact, a study examining 10 cryotherapy sessions over the course of 4 weeks resulted in a significant decrease in fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and inflammation. Another study found a significant improvement in insulin resistance and blood glucose levels. A study investigating the effects of 15 sessions of infrared heat over a 3-week period found a significant improvement in insulin sensitivity, pain reduction, and physical capabilities in subjects with type 2 diabetes when compared to a control group.

Targeted Nutritional Supplementation

At Re-Gen, we also utilize nutritional supplements to improve diabetes. Research has shown that fish oil, Vitamin D, and CoQ10 can protect from the cardiovascular implications of diabetes (found in our Healthy Aging Blend), while Vitamin C, E, glutathione, and alpha lipoic acid (found in our Antioxidant Blend) can reduce diabetic inflammation, which is positively correlated with insulin resistance and blood sugar levels. Finally B Vitamins, particularly B12, and green tea extract (found in our Gut Health Blend) have been shown to improve the health of those with diabetes.

Guided Fitness and Flexibility Training

Fitness and flexibility are crucial to the health, physical function, and length of life. However, this can be difficult with diabetes. It can also be dangerous if not working with professionals who know the signs and symptoms of diabetic shock, neuropathies, and cardiovascular events. However, with proper guidance and supervision, structured exercise programs from Re-Gen Fitness and Recovery can improve insulin function, fasting glucose, HbA1c levels, pancreatic function, and heart health, resulting in a longer and healthier life.
